I started playing Piano when I was six years old. My first encounter with a piano was when my family lived on this 5 acre chicken farm in Petaluma. I found a little sewing machine hammer and started banging the keys on an old upright we had in the house. After awhile-- oddly enough the middle C on the piano started getting warn down and eventually fell off!
We had that piano until we moved to Carmichael. Eventually when I was about 8 my parents bought a Yamaha Conservatory Grand. Man-- we were lucky-- I remember our piano teacher a lady by the name of Mrs. Rother was thrilled and loved playing it. At the time I was more into running around outside with my Buddy's and playing baseball--- I used to hide up in this big pine tree in front of our house when ever I would hear my mom call me to come practice---she'd get upset sometimes. I learned scales and how to read and play all the songs. I remember one of the first songs I wrote was about some farm animals-- I played it at a recital we had.
It was at this big church downtown Sacramento across from Sutters Fort. I'll never forget having someone put a pillow there for me to sit on. I was about ta go in my pants I was so nervous, but I got up there and did it and played my little song. I was pretty proud of myself!
Then--- up next after me was a kid the same age as me-- a little genius prodigy--- he whips out this Classical piece and was all over that piano like a pro!! I kinda felt like-- dang how did he get to play piano so well! It didn't' make me want to play very much--- but I kept learning piano until I started and eventually lost interest in 6Th grade.
Eventually, I picked it up again after a few years--- this time I began making up my own songs and started playing the piano 6 to 8 hours a day in the summers. I started at the beginning and re-taught myself everything I had learned but made up my own songs on the way. One summer I saved up enough money mowing lawns and washing dishes to buy an electric piano. It was a Yamaha Cp30 piano. It had a great touch to it and had different settings It lasted along time. Everybody wanted a piano player--- I had people calling me to play in their band-- but I wasn't old enough.
It seems like the older I got the smarter I became and understood music. I must have started from the basics 4-5 times before I started understanding how music works--- of course growing up in the late 60's & 70's was challenging as a teenager being around the Party till you drop-Chich & Chong mentality. The kids these days seem so much smarter and of course with today's technology--- it helps!
